So, You're in Advertising?

I met Nicole at Belltown Bistro where the Seattle Ad Club was meeting. Nicole is just getting involved with them. Nicole and I studied abroad together two summers ago, but we also both have advertising degrees from Michigan State. We were also both involved in the American Advertising Federation and both presenters for the National Student Advertising Competition (though we were involved in different years).
So I mingled with all these Seattle advertisers, a lot of them work for Young and Rubicam and are working with Microsoft in one way or another. I felt like I was missing out on something while hanging out with all these young professionals. I was a little jealous. I wanted to hop in and put my advertising degree to use.
My worry is that when I’m done with this trip I won’t remember too much of my advertising education. I’ll have to read up on everything. I loved my advertising classes, classmates, professors, and even a lot of the homework. In one way I’m not sure if I fit in. It’s hard for me to dress somewhat professionally all the time.
I walked away really wanting to work for a large ad agency and work on a big campaign that I could point to on TV and say, “Hey, I worked on that.” After this trip is said and done I might just have a lot more input as well. I want to be an advertising genius. That’d be cool. I want to “orbit the giant hairball” and be the “creative paradox.”
p.s. Last night I had an amazingly delicious chicken and cheese burrito!

I just read your post about advertising. No doubt all the life experiences you will gain from your year on the road around the US will help in this area. You are gaining a first hand knowledge and feel for people not only from one small region, but the entire USA! I'm sure that will help you immensely as you embark on your advertising career. I wouldn't worry about it; If a class was the end-all, be-all of advertising sucess, everyone one with a bachelor's degree would be an advertising genius. And "Business Casual" is a pain in the ass.

I have been in advertising since 1985 and was weened on the early innovators of Silicon Valley....what a book I could write. Maybe someday. Now I am semi retired in Cottage Grove, Oregon, population 9010. It's a far cry from the hustle in Silicon Valley, but my clients still demand the best. Good luck to you...enjoy it while you can.
