You're viewing the original Hometown Invasion Tour website as it appeared in 2006/07. At the time, a site built with tables and flash was commonplace. A few backend changes were made to keep the site functioning, but it appears just as it did 16 years ago.

Saturday, Jul 21, 2007 from Burlington, Vermont

Meeting people is what I do. I meet all kinds of people and in all kinds of circumstances. Yesterday while at the Burton factory store I had on my State shirt. Something I love to do now is wear a local shirt, it always draws a comment. If I wear something from MSU and I’m this far away from Michigan it will draw a comment, gaurenteed. Same thing when I wear my “I love Belleville, Illinois” shirt. So I had my State shirt on and hear someone ask if I was from Michigan. Sure enough, and I meet a wonderful family of six who is on their family vacation. They were from Shelby Township. It makes my day to run into Michiganders. I would run into them later that same day on Church Street.

Today is another story. So after a walk and getting rained on (again!) I decided I would go for a short drive. Going for a drive is the best way for me to relax, do what I love, and to simply be in a familiar place, as I’ve spent a lot of time in my Compass. So I was in my car for a couple minutes, just on a casual drive still in the neighborhood in Burlington. Behind me, I start hearing this loud honking. It was clearly the type of honking that is meant to get somebody’s attention. I figured it couldn’t be me, I don’t know anyone in this town. Then I hear it again. So finally I come to a stop sign and all of a sudden this white SUV comes rushing up next to the driver side window while they were in the wrong lane! Clearly I’m thinking what are these wackos doing. Well, some guy sticks his head out of the window and it was Dennis!!! …who I had previously met in Seabrook, NH. I couldn’t believe it. For the first time of the trip I completely ran into somebody I knew without any expectations of it. Ahhh I love the small world stuff. He was even wearing a Mustard Plug t-shirt, a well known band in Michigan, but surely not anywhere else. Good stuff and about half a dozen more people to hang out with in Burlington.

P.S. Something I haven’t mentioned needs to be mentioned. I love the street numbers in New England. They almost all start in the double digits, sometimes single digits, such as in New Jersey I stayed at an address with a number of 8, after that it was 32, then 39, and the list goes on. I haven’t seen that anyone else in the country. In New England it’s very hard to find a street address with 5 digits, which is very very common in towns across the rest of country.
