You're viewing the original Hometown Invasion Tour website as it appeared in 2006/07. At the time, a site built with tables and flash was commonplace. A few backend changes were made to keep the site functioning, but it appears just as it did 16 years ago.

Roadkill: 12

Sunday, Sep 24, 2006 from White Bear Lake, Minnesota

Today was about another six hours in the car driving from Winterset, IA to White Bear Lake, MN. Aside from music I decided from now on I need something else to pass the time by while I’m driving. So I figured I’d start counting things. On highway 169 from Winterset to Blue Earth, MN I counted a total of 12 roadkill. Poor little animals, mostly raccoons I think.

Anyways… maybe that’s not necessary to know. But hey, I needed some entertainment. The drive started off really beautiful and got increasingly boring so it helped some.

Any ideas of what I should count on my next big drive?

out of state license plates, cars with spoiled children and their dvd players in the backseat (better done at night), billboards for local things vs. national chains, people pointing at/trying to read your car as you drive by...

Oh, I forgot a big one. Once you get out West a ways you can start counting billboards for a particular tourist trap. You could get up to 40-100 or so before you reach the exit.

Yah, the librarian in me has something to say. Too bad you couldn't get your hands on some books on tape (CD). They are wonderful for traveling. I will look through my collection and send some to you if you could somehow notify me with an address that you will be at. Most of my collection are ones that you would probably pass on. Another option is to download them. There are various ebook sites out there. Let me know if you want help on this. Dawn

You could count hobos, broken down cars, pulled over drivers, hitchhikers, rest areas, cop cars, or people driving without realizing their blinker is on.

Wall drug signs for sure. I would count how many Yellow cars you see.
