You're viewing the original Hometown Invasion Tour website as it appeared in 2006/07. At the time, a site built with tables and flash was commonplace. A few backend changes were made to keep the site functioning, but it appears just as it did 16 years ago.

Take Care Winterset

Saturday, Sep 23, 2006 from Winterset, Iowa

My few days in Winterset were spent doing lots of exploring on my own. I drove nearly 200 miles going back and forth the bridges at different times of days as well to other spots around the area.

Winterset is a great little town. It’s interesting to see how a famous movie changes a town though. There are definitely a lot of visitors coming to Winterset and Madison County just to see the bridges, even though there are other counties in the country with many more bridges. Without the movie “The Bridges of Madison County” I’m sure Winterset would be much different.

My favorite part about the town is the courthouse. There’s this big beautiful old courthouse in the center of the town square. Facing it are the storefronts from all four sides. Towns aren’t set up like that anymore.

While in Winterset I got an inside look from a new demographic, young single mothers. It puts a lot of things into perspective and I really learned a lot.

Driving around Winterset in this decked out Jeep Compass is a lot different than driving around in a big city. Small towns just aren’t used to seeing some car with decals all over. I got a lot of funny stares. Being from a town even smaller than Winterset I can relate.

It was a good week in Iowa. The scenery is fantastic, and I’m not being sarcastic. There were some beautiful sunsets and that’s about all it takes for me to sit back and enjoy a place. Take care Iowa.
